During this time Gareth studied with (amongst others) Paula Gardiner, Steve Waterman and Keith Tippett, and had regular trombone lessons with Mark Bassey at Trinity College, London.
The Gareth Roberts Quintet were formed in 2003 and since then they have released two critically acclaimed albums (see albums). In 2007 they were one of three bands in the UK to be selected to receive a Jazz Services Promoter's Choice Award and as a result of this they have gone on to perform at many of the UK's most prestigious Jazz Festivals and have also completed a full UK tour. (for more details see bands).
Gareth is much in demand as a trombone player and as well as playing with several different bands he also receives regular bookings for session work. In the last few years his playing has featured on several albums encompassing a wide variety of musical styles, including jazz, latin, pop, rock and hip-hop (a full list appears below).
I recent years Gareth has been involved more and more with the local big band scene. He plays in many local bands and in 2013 he was awarded the Jazz4Jed bursary to compose several pieces for Welsh big bands. Two of these are available to hear on his Soundcloud page
At present, as well as working professionally as a trombone player Gareth is heavily involved with music education. He teaches music part-time in a Welsh language comprehensive school in Cardiff, conducts two school jazz bands and runs music workshops for pupils of all ages. (see teaching)
